Rules
How the Race Works
- Each team starts behind the starting line with one person pushing the wheelbarrow and the other riding inside.
- The passenger must carry a bucket of water throughout the race.
- Teams race around a cone approximately 15 metres away and return to the starting line.
- At the starting line, the driver and passenger swap positions. The bucket of water must be handed to the new passenger.
- Teams complete a second lap, returning to the finish line.
- The aim is to finish quickly while keeping as much water in the bucket as possible!
Scoring – Every team starts with 50 points.
- 1st place – No points deducted
- 2nd place – Minus 5 points
- 3rd place – Minus 10 points
- 4th place – Minus 15 points
- 5th place – Minus 20 points
Water Spillage
All buckets will contain the same amount of water at the start of each race. Judges will measure the water remaining at the finish.
- No spillage – No points deducted
- Up to 25% spilled – Minus 5 points
- More than 25% to 50% spilled – Minus 10 points
- More than 50% to 75% spilled – Minus 15 points
- More than 75% spilled or an empty bucket – Minus 20 points
Additional Penalties
- Knocking over the turning cone – Minus 5 points
- Failing to complete the driver/passenger swap correctly – Minus 5 points
- Deliberately tipping out water – Disqualification
- Interfering with another team – Disqualification
Final Score = 50 points minus race position, water spillage and any additional penalties.
The team with the highest score wins. In the event of a tie, the fastest finishing time will determine the winner.
General Rules and Safety
- Each competitor may enter once per category but may also compete in the Mixed Teams category with a different partner.
- The passenger must remain seated inside the wheelbarrow, and the driver must push with both hands.
- Teams must stay in their designated lanes.
- No deliberate bumping, pushing or interfering with other teams.
- Wheelbarrows must be kept under control. Dangerous or reckless behaviour will result in disqualification.
- Closed-toe footwear is compulsory for both competitors.
- A team affected by interference may be offered a rerun.
- Judges’ decisions are final. Any additional instructions will be explained before racing begins.
REMEMBER – IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT SPEED!
Keep your passenger in, your water in the bucket and your wheelbarrow on track!
Fastest doesn’t always mean first – the team that balances speed, teamwork and keeping their water wins!
