GENERAL INFORMATION

2009 is the 121st year that the Annual Bungendore Show has set the scene for fun and healthy competition and displays of the finest talent, animals and produce in our area and beyond. We at the Bungendore Show Society have all the plans in action to make Sunday 25 January 2009 another memorable day.

The range of events and entertainment in 2009 is extensive and reflects the traditional events we all look for at an agricultural show and also developing trends in the rural community.

Exhibitors and visitors can be sure to find an event to suit them with sections for an ever expanding range of cattle, goats, sheep and poultry. The Championship Dog Show grows in size and reputation with every passing year. In the calm of the Pavilion, you'll find an amazing array of exhibits, from flowers to photography, handicrafts and needlework, preserves, home brews and vegetable and farm produce.
Horse events that were cancelled for 2008 due to animal transport restrictions resulting from the equine influenza outbreak will return in 2009. Additional attractions for 2009 will be advised when details are known. Details of the Pet Parade and Flat Chat Dog Race (both introduced in 2008) are shown below.

2008 Bungendore Show

Pet Parade Report

The Pet Parade was a new event at the 2008 Bungendore Show and it proved to be a very popular one. A wide variety of pets and their handlers (both the young and young at heart), proudly paraded their pets and were judged in a wide range of categories.

By far the most unusual pet on parade was Perry, a two year old Velvet Worm brought along by its owner Asha Cardillo. Asha and her worm took out the most unusual category and also an equal first in the smallest pet category. Linley Reynolds with her 6 month old yabbie, Pinchy, was the other first place in the smallest pet category and Linley’s yabbie was a very close second in the most unusual category.

There were a large number of dogs entered in the parade and so the judging was broken down into small, medium and large size dogs. Results were as follows:

Small Dogs:
1st Mr Buttons (Jacob Nichols)
2nd Milo (Ashleigh Larsen)
3rd Ben (Ashleigh Bennett)

Medium Dogs:
1st Sandy (Leigh Cassells)
2nd Chico (Gloria Elder)
3rd Holly (Amanda Clarke)

Large Dogs:
1st Andy (Tique Borbas)
2nd Olly (Casey Ivey)
3rd Arri (Laura Field)

Another fun category was the “Pet Looking Most Like Its Owner”, which was a very difficult judging assignment and resulted in an equal first place awarded to Ellen Winters and her dog Muffin and James Brewer, with his sister’s young dog Miss Muffet.

The final and very challenging judging task was to award Champion Pet and Reserve Champion Pet. Pets and their handlers were asked to parade before the judges, who looked for aspects such as behaviour, attention to the handler’s signals, general happiness and friendliness in the pets.

In the inaugural Bungendore Show Pet Parade, which was possible due to the generous support and sponsorship of the Bungendore Veterinary Surgery, the Champion Pet for 2008 was awarded to “Arri” and his handler Laura Field. Reserve Champion Pet went to “Keats” and his owner Julie Cassells.

The popularity of the very first Pet Parade has firmly cemented the event in the regular schedule for future Bungendore Shows.

Flat Chat Dog Race Report

(Photos attached)

The AC Pets & Aquarium inaugural FLAT CHAT DOG RACE was another first time event at the 2008 Bungendore Show.

Once again, this new event was well supported by keen dog owners from around the Bungendore region. Due to the number of entries, heats were held by size of dog, with the first and second place getters in each heat progressing through to the final. The line stewards decision was final and thanks go to the local SES & Bush Fire Brigade volunteers who took on this role.

As the heats were conducted, it was clear that it was not necessarily the fastest dogs that were covering the 60 metre long track in the quickest time. Winning in a race depended on the dog running straight, ignoring interference from other dogs or interesting things somewhere on the sideline. The ability of the handler to attract and hold their dog’s attention was also a very necessary skill.

The finalist were:

Small dogs – Muffin (Ellen Winters) & Milo (Ashleigh Larsen)
Medium Dogs – Lou (Suzanne Clubb) & Seb (Kayla Bennett)
Large Dogs – Olly (Len Ivey) & Andy (Michael Borbas)

And the results were:

Flat Chat Dog Champion 2008 – Lou
2nd Place – Muffin
3rd Place – Milo
Wooden Spoon – Seb

AC Pets and Aquarium made the event possible with donations of four bags of dog feed for the winner, place getters and the last dog over the line as well as the Champion trophy and medallions for the place getters. Lou’s owner Suzanne Clubb says they will be back in 2009 to defend their title, so the challenge has been thrown down and the event will be on again at the 2009 Bungendore Show.

COME ON – TAKE ME IN THE FLAT CHAT DOG RACE AT THE BUNGENDORE SHOW!!!
Flat Chat Pic 1            Sponsored by AC Pets & Aquarium, Gibraltar Street, Bungendore

HERE’S HOW THE RACE IS RUN….

WHERE: On the main arena at the Bungendore Show Grounds, 25 January 2009 (right out in front of the main show pavilion).
WHEN:  Approximately 2.00pm. Entries will be taken during the Pet Parade and just prior to the event. Announcements will be made during the Show. Entry Fee: Gold Coin
HOW THE RACE WILL WORK:
For this event you require your fastest pet dog and a friend. One person (person A) will hold the dog at one end of a marked race track while the other person (person B) backs away from the dog until they are standing on the finish line. Person B can call the dog as they walk away and can even have doggy treats, all in the name of enticing the dog, once the starter’s horn blows, to quickly race towards person B. The first dog across the finish line wins. Heats may be held, depending on the number of entrants. Heats likely to be categorised by dog size (ie small, medium and large dogs). Dogs causing interference during a heat or final with other dogs will be eliminated.
PRIZES:

  • Ribbon for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the heats.
  • Product and trophy for the winner of the final.
  • Product and medallion for 2nd & 3rd in the final.
  • Product for wooden spooner (dog that crosses the finish line last in the final)

All animals must be restrained and under TOTAL control by their handlers AT ALL TIMES
to prevent accident or injury.
All purebreds and crossbreds may compete for prizes.

IF YOUR DOG HAS A TENDENCY TO BITE STRANGE DOGS, THEN PLEASE
DO NOT ENTER IT INTO THIS EVENT.
WE WANT NO INJURY OR DOG ARGUMENTS!

PRESIDENT'S REPORT 2008

BUNGENDORE P.A. & H. SOCIETY INCORPORATED

PRESIDENTS REPORT TO THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON 13 AUGUST 2008.

Despite the loss of the Horse Section due to the Equine Influenza outbreak, the 2008 Bungendore Show was one of the most successful Shows of recent years both from a financial point of view and as a great day out for the community.

The Horse Section attracts the second largest entry of any horse event in the Canberra/Southern Highlands area and the Gate Fees generated by entrants represents a significant proportion of the Show’s gate-takings.  Accordingly, the Committee was faced with the challenge of developing a Show Day programme that would attract the public in sufficient numbers to off-set the lack of a horse section.

I am pleased to be able to report that the Committee rose to the challenge.  Their efforts coupled with, I am sure, a great response from the local community, resulted in only a small drop in gate takings.  The outstanding weather on the day was also no doubt a contributing factor.

The new events proved very popular with the public, particularly those that involved public participation such as the Flat Chat Dog Race and the Pet Parade.  I am still amazed at the popularity the Scone Buttering Competition and we now appear to have progressed to separate adult and junior competitions.  The flying display by the radio-controlled aircraft was another popular event and drew many favourable comments.

I encourage the new Committee to include as many of the new attractions introduced at the 2008 Show, as practicable, in the 2009 Show programme. Our 2008 Showgirl, Caitlin Brewer, went on to represent the Zone at the State final in Sydney. Although she was unsuccessful in achieving any of the top three places, my discussion with the Judges at the Country Shows Reception after the judging indicated that they were very impressed by her responses during her interview. Their general opinion was that she should be encouraged to re-enter the competition at some stage.

While discussing the Showgirl Competition it is appropriate that I should mention the recent tragic death of our Year 2000 Showgirl, Kirsten Mitchell, and to express condolences to her parents, Doug and Claire, who are long serving members of the Society.

In conclusion I wish to thank all members of the Committee for their support and enthusiasm over the past year and for their efforts in making the 2008 Bungendore Show one of the best of recent years.

PRESIDENT
